Product Information

When adding a new product or clicking on an existing product's "Edit" button, the first page you will see for the product is the Information Tab.


Product Information

The first section is labeled "Product Information." This is where you will enter the product's basic details.

  • ID/Sku
    This is the product's unique store keeping unit (SKU) identifier in your store.
  • MFG ID
    if the product has a unique ID given to it at the manufacturer level (for example, a UPC or series number), it can be entered here.
  • Name
    This will be the product's name as it will be displayed for your shoppers.
  • Short Descr.
    Here you can enter a short description for the product. The information entered here will display on search results for the product.
  • Manufacturer
    *If you have the product's manufacturer set up on the store, you can link the product to that manufacturer using this menu.
  • Distributor
    *If this product is acquired through a distributor, you may assign the product to that distributor using this menu.

Categories

The next section in the Information Tab is for assigning the product to your Categories

To add the product to categories, simply click on the "Add" button to the right and select the category or categories to which the product will belong.

Tip: Products can be placed in multiple categories if that is desired.


Pricing

Below the "Categories" section you will see two additional sections for Pricing and Options

Under Pricing, you will specify the main pricing that will be used for the product on the store:

  • Cost
    This will be the product's unit cost to you as a merchant. It is not a number shown on the store front but rather a number intended for profit reporting.
  • Price
    This is the product's price as it will be displayed to your shoppers on your store front.
  • Retail Price
    This will be the product's price as it would appear at retail level. Typically, this price is higher than your product's price described above. When used, your product will display to your online shoppers as costing {x amount} at retail, but costing only {y amount} at your store, thereby saving them {n amount} by shopping at your store.
  • On Sale
    *This will be the product's Sale Price if/when it is offered as being "On Sale."

*Tip: To mark the product as being "On Sale," mark the "On Sale" checkbox and save the Information Page. The product will then be represented on your store front with an "On Sale" tag further notifying your shoppers that it is on special.

Options

Under the Options sub-section, you will have some additional choices available to the product.

These options are certain presentation variables that can be set for the product.

  • Non-Taxable
    If the individual product is not applicable for tax charges, this checkbox will allow you to prevent tax charges from being applied to it.
  • Not For Sale
    This checkbox will allow the product to be displayed on the storefront, but not purchased. For example, you may want to display products that need to meet a certain release date requirement, so you are not allowed to sell the item just yet, but can display it.
  • Hide
    This checkbox will hide the product from view altogether. This can be useful for situations where the product is out of stock indefinitely and rather than deleting the product, it can be hidden.
  • Gift Certificate
    *This checkbox will make the product a "Gift Certificate" item that allows the shopper to purchase a special gift certificate code (to be used on your store). By checking this box, the item will be displayed with a basic email form so that the shopper can send the gift certificate to a friend.
  • Home Special
    Marks the item as a "Featured Product" on your store's Home Page.
  • Category Special
    Marks the item as a "Featured Product" on the product's parent Category.
  • Non-Searchable
    Prevents the product from coming up as a search result. May be useful for product listings that are more service related (i.e. Gift Wrapping, Engraving, etc) than actual physical product.

Shipping Options

The Next section of the Information Tab is for your product's shipping options.

These options come into play for when the product's shipping calculation is applied to orders containing the product.

  • Shipping
    Use this field if you would like to add an additional markup to the product's shipping price. The markup will be added to the order's shipping calculation invisibly
  • One Box/Mult. Boxes
    Select the appropriate radio button for this product's boxing selection. If the product can be shipped in one box, you can then enter weights and dimensions for the product's packaging. If Multiple Boxes are selected, then you can add weights and dimensions for each box in the packaging.
  • Weight
    *Use this to enter the product's unit weight which will be factored in for shipping calculation.
  • Height, Width, Depth
    These fields can be used to enter the product's unit dimensions.
  • Free Shipping
    If you are offerring Free Shipping on the item, mark this checkbox. The product will then be displayed with a "Free Shipping" icon on the store front and will be marked as not-applicable for shipping charges.
  • Ships by Itself
    Use this checkbox if the product requires unique packaging that will require it to be shipped separately from other items.

*Tip: When entering weight units for the product, please enter the numerical value as dictated by your specific shipping carrier. For example, if your shipping carrier deals in metric units, then you will enter the metric number for the product's weight. There is no need to convert a metric unit's number to fit standard weight if your carrier does not deal in standard units. Click here for our KB article which describes this in more detail.


Inventory Options

Directly beneath your product's Shipping Options section, you will find the "Inventory Options" section.

This portion of the Information Tab is available to set the product's individual inventory control options.

  • Inventory Control
    Here you can specify how the product is displayed on the store front when its stock number reaches 0
    • Default
      Uses the global Inventory Control set in the store's Settings =>General =>Store Settings page.
    • Out of Stock
      When the product reaches 0 in stock, then it is shown as such on the store front and cannot be purchased until stock is replenished.
    • Back Order
      Shows the item as being available for Back Order and allows it to be purchased. To be fulfilled by the merchant when stock is replenished.
    • Waiting List
      Shows the product as out of stock, but allows the shopper to place themself on a waiting list to be contacted when the item is replenished.
  • Current Stock
    Shows the item's current Quantity on Hand (QoH). If item is present on pending orders, current stock will show (+Y On Hold).
  • New Stock
    *Entering a number here and saving the page will update your inventory on the item to the entered number.
  • Stock Alert
    When inventory on the item reaches below the number entered in this field, the store will email the merchant to notify them that the item is running low. Entering a 0 disables the stock alert. If you would like the store to notify you when it reaches 0 on the item, then enter a 1 in this field.

*Tip: As an alternative, you can also add incremental amounts by specifying a plus sign to the number in order to add that amount to the current stock. For example, if your current stock is 16 and you receive a shipment of 15 additional units, you can either enter 31 into the "New Stock" field or otherwise enter +15 to have the 15 new units added to the current stock.

Inventory Control Messages

To the right of the Inventory Control options, you will have three fields which can be used to set the product's display depending on its current stock level. These are to be used if you would like the product to show something other than the default inventory message.

  • In Stock Message
    The default system message is "Available" when the item is in stock.
  • Out of Stock Message
    The default system message is "Out of Stock" when item is set to the Out of Stock inventory control option.
  • Back Order Message
    The default system message is "Back Order" when the item is set to use the "Back Order" inventory control option.

Tip: You can change the default/global inventory message from the Store Language section available in Settings =>Design =>Store Language.


Description

Next we have the product's Extended Description area where you can fully describe the product's various attributes and features.

The section will take either text or HTML coding in order to format the description area.

Tip: If you are not familiar with HTML editing, the extended description area can also be formatted using the 3dcart Online Store Manager's built-in WYSIWYG editor.


Keywords

The keywords section is where you can place the product listing's various keywords and phrases

Keywords will be used to return search results to customers when using the store's built-in search functionality

Tip: Keywords should consist of a combination of singular words (such as "camera") and/or phrases (such as "digital SLR camera") in order to return more appropriate search results.


Custom Fields

Below the Keywords area, you will find a series of extra fields that can be applied to the product.

There are 13 additional fields altogether and they can be used to any additional information that you would like to the product's listing. These fields can be used for additional attributes that are shared amongst all of your products. For example, information such as Material, Available Colors, Warranty information, etc.

The first 5 fields will accept general text or basic HTML. The rest of the Custom Fields will allow for more advanced HTML through WYSIWYG.

Note: When using Custom Fields, they will be displayed on the product listing page as Field 1:, Field 2:, etc. by default. You can change each field's designation in the Store Language section available in Settings =>Design =>Store Language.
